Amateur Night? Not for These Bands

AMONG the familiar tenets of successful musicians — play loud, live fast, blame the bad stuff on the drummer — there’s one that is rarely heard beyond the tour bus.“It’s well known in the business that New Year’s Eve is amateur night for bands,” said Jerry Vivino, saxophonist in the Max Weinberg 7, the featured players on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.” He is a veteran of many Dec. 31 gigs with his own jazz quartet. “People are out getting drunk,” he said, “so the music doesn’t matter. Anybody can play and people will have a good time.” But Mr. Vivino — a Paterson native and brother of the rock guitarist Jimmy Vivino (who also plays in the Max Weinberg 7) and the comedian Uncle Floyd Vivino — was speaking broadly. For the third time since 2004, he and his band will play this New Year’s Eve at Shanghai Jazz in Madison, where revelers, he said, are respectful. “This is an educated crowd,” he said. “If people are looking for a certain type of party — loud, a lot of drunk people — they’re not going to find it in this setting.” Across New Jersey, more than a few well-known clubs and the home-grown artists who love them are doing their best to erase the amateur-night designation. Like Jerry Vivino, who now lives in Nanuet, N.Y., the New Brunswick-based post-punk band Thursday will play the room they consider their home venue, according to Geoff Rickly, the front man: Starland Ballroom, in Sayreville. Not that Thursday is expecting the same dressed-up, well-behaved crowd that Mr. Vivino is.“We’ve done a holiday show the last four years, but never New Year’s Eve,” said Mr. Rickly, who just completed a tour with Thursday behind this year’s “Kill the House Lights” (Victory Records), a live CD partly recorded at Starland Ballroom. “This year we’re taking the plunge.” What he expects, he said, is what he usually sees at the Sayreville haunt, only with “more of a buzz.”

Angels and Airwaves announced tour dates!

With the hiatus of pop-punk superstars blink-182 in full effect by the fall of 2005, singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge revealed the formation of his new band — one he'd already been working with for six months — Angels Airwaves. With the notoriety of his previous group, much hype ensued after the announcement: in interviews with outlets like mtv.com, DeLonge proclaimed (among other things) that the new music would take elements of bands like U2 and Pink Floyd and ultimately be something of a revolution to change the face of rock roll forever.Rounding out brainchild and songwriter DeLonge were guitarist David Kennedy (Boxcar Racer, Hazen Street), drummer Atom Willard (Rocket from the Crypt, the Offspring), and bassist Ryan Sinn (the Distillers). See the tourdates inside!

CD review: SIXX:AM - The Heroin Diaries

„My deepest, darkest moments are out there.“ Soundtrack for a non-existing film. Prepare your mind, imagine a cruel word, push play… My dear diary, I listened to a very unusual album today. I realy don´t know what to think about it. In one moment I was scared, in the other I had tears in my eyes. It starts with a monologue about Xmas, about fucking Xmas (it reminds me lyrics of Radiohead´s Fitter happier). Following Van Nuys is very strong – lyrics and music. So emotional, I think! Next is Life is beautiful – song with great guitar parts, I can say it is a metal song (yes, I imagined different song with this poet name, shame). Pray for me is number four. I wanted to stop listening – so boring, so simmilar… But I didn´t! The next song – Tommorow is absolutely fabulous! Continuing with Accident will happen – this song is the best on this album, in my opinion. Next Intermission is again starting with monologue and again you can listen to long guitar parts. Dead man‘s ballet is whole about blaming God, dying, drugs… a bit depressing song. Piano opens Heart failure, but it is the next metal song on this album. Slow, sweet, sexy Girl with golden eyes contents next part of the Heroine diary – experience with methadone. Blistering song Courtesy call and intimate Permission is absolutely truth. The last Life after death is weird, I don´t want to life after death like this! So what is the conclusion? Maybe my opinion is different from American’s (they like this album a lot!), maybe because of I´m not on the drugs… But I expect something better. Yeah, it´s not a bad album, definitely not! But… I feel only a tendency to write out the feeling from a bad period of Nikki Sixx´s life. Nothing else, sorry :(

Searching for Alternative ringtones

Well, most of you would like your phone to ring with you favorite alternative song ringtone! But most ringtones site offer only pop/rnb tracks! Besides the companies selling ringtones, are seldomly give a great variation of good alternative music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_music) songs! You can find only 2 or 3 tracks from your favorite band! But many of us would like a rare song, for our phone to be really unique! The ideal would be if a site would offer a great variety of free ringtones (http://www.goldringtone.com) in the highest quality. I believe that if you search in alternative music forums, you will find many of them! So we have to work hard in order to make our phones ring in alternative tones!
